Hello Karl
the Opuntia humifusa is amazing!
My friend said this is with many spine. And they got seeds
from Piltz and S.Brack.
Due to its spine, they use it not so many. -
Hi Yunhan,
right, the spines are horrible but the graftings grow enormously.
I never wear gloves while grafting or potting cacti but when grafting on humifusa-stocks there is no way without...Cheers,

Hello Tim
You use the Pereskopsis?
I grafted seedlings on that and met spines, it is affordable to me. And my
friends are get used to that spine, but he not use the Opuntia humifusa.Maybe this could be a solution, use the fire to burn the spine.
I put a Zipper with fire close to my TH, and its spine burned away,
it not hurt the body at all. It just takes less that 1 Seconds. -

Opuntia humifusa has several advantages: easy multiplication, small paddles (occupy small pots), easy engraftment of the grafts, resistance to cold / moisture / diseases, rapid rooting. But there are some disadvantages: in winter, the paddles shrink a lot, the graft grows rapidly initially and then slows down, are not a long-lived rootstock (sometimes dry out; they are not adequate to support the weight of a adult graft), high summer's temperatures stop their growth.
I avoided these problems by using another opuntia (perhaps it is Opuntia cardiosperma?). Only small flaws: it is less resistant to the cold of O. humifusa (but it bears occasional frosts down to 4-5 degrees below zero) and requires more space.
To achieve a stronger growth graft, I recommend you choose a large paddle, one year old, and do not cut it too low. Greater will be the photosynthetic surface, greater will be the force imparted to the grafted bud. -
Ciao Massimo,
thanks for your post, I agree about O. humifusa. I have no experience with the other opuntia you mention, can you show some picture?
grazie ciao
