Numbering System

  • Hello everyone

I am curious what protocol is applied when buying a seedling that does not have a grower code attached?

    For example:

I have purchased a seedling that was grown from seed made by Michelle Killen in the USA, her number for the seed is MIK.2018.70 and the grower did not add their own initials or number to the plant.

What would the normal process to follow in this situation? Do I simply use my won initials and number? Unsure how this should work.

    Cheers!

    Grant

  • Hi Grant,

the Number MIK.2018.70 is the number of the intersection. that means breader MIK (Michelle Killen), 2018 (year) and 70 is the intersectionsnumber of her.

If there is no seedlingsnumber by the Breeder, mybe the seedling was no First bloom until now.

what you can do is MIK.2018.70.(Your Breader initials ).1 for seedling. In my case it would be MIK.2018.70.AHO.1

So you can do it with all Seedlings 2,3, 4

Each plant is in that System easy to identify about there origin and there relatives.

    Cheers.

  • Hi Andreas,

Thanks for your reply and advice. I understand the breeder intersection part, but I was not sure if it is ok to apply my name and initials, because I did not sow the seed. There are no clones of the plant, I am the only one growing it - so it makes sense that it be identified with my code.

The plant is very large now and forming it's first flower buds, it will be spring here in Australia soon. So soon I will be able to post photos of my flowers and crosses that I will make. Such a good time of year!

    Thanks again & Best Regards,

    Grant

  • Hi Grant, normally you'd probably have to apply to get an official breeders code assigned to you. These are from the AG Echinopsis, so it's not always the initials but whatever you chose for your code. Some might already be taken and there's a list that you can look up somewhere. Of course you can just use your initials, but if you want it officially recognized by the AG EH you might have to get in touch with Bernard or whoever is doing that job there and ask them to sign you up for the AG and register the code. But like I said, nobody would stop you from using whatever code you like to keep track of your crosses and use it the way Andreas just described.

    Hi Pat,

Thanks for your reply and advice.

I have applied and been accepted as a member, Bernhard is away on holidays at the moment though so not sure exactly what code will be available for me.

I’m hoping it’s my initials and have requested it be those.
I’ll await confirmation before doing anything, was just curious how that might work in the situation I have, where I’ve purchased seedlings from others.

Another question would be what to do in situations where the breeder does not use a number code?

Or if the plant has no identification at all and is an unknown?
    Thanks & Best regards

    Grant

  • If the breeder doesn't have a code then you just leave it empty. You'd only put your own code on it for stuff where you are the breeder. Non AG breeders often use a completely different system or none at all. But you could probably add the same type of breeders shortcode for seedlings at the end, like that PNO.001, PNO.002 or whatever it is for you. It would at least keep track of which AG breeder grew the plant from seeds.
